Rats were fasted for 10-12 h before receiving the [3-3H]thymidine or [3-3H]uridine. Rats were injected with 2 mg of unlabeled glucose or uridine prior to the injection of the tritium compounds. At 30, 60, 90, and 120 min, rats were killed and the diaphragms were removed and frozen. The frozen diaphragms were homogenized in 3 ml of 10 mM tris-maleate and kept in 0.5 ml of 10 mM tris-maleate at pH 7.4.
